In this episode, we are thrilled to welcome back to the podcast our friend Kristen Earp. You may recognize her from the VirtForce community. She is one of our fantastic vetted career coaches.
It’s no secret we are living in strange times right now. As milspouses, we are definitely used to a certain amount of uncertainty and, let’s call it what it is, weirdness in our lives. However, this is magnified and is unlike anything we’ve dealt with before.
We are going to break down Kristen’s 3 Tips to Navigating Remote Work and Social Distancing.
- Stop calling it social distancing. Reframe it in your mind as physical distancing.
- Think about where you can make an impact.
- Know that eventually this will pass.
Hear us out on this: the job market does not have to be a scary place right now. There are amazing opportunities out there, from open jobs to volunteer work to courses designed to develop new skills. This strange time is also a great time to learn how to engage as part of a remote team and how to be successful while working from home. We need to be open to engaging in different ways and unlearning practices that no longer benefit us.
Yes, there is so much opportunity that isn’t there right now. But there are also so many opportunities we can take advantage of and take into our own control. Use intentional thought and consider what this might look like for you. This is the time to brainstorm and dream big. What will your new normal look like? What do you want to do away with?
Amazingly, we are proving certain things, like remote work, actually work right now. Before quarantine, there were so many misconceptions about remote work and/or working from home. You won’t be able to get work done, you won’t be productive, you can’t run a team remotely, and on and on. But here’s the thing - you absolutely can work from home and be successful and thriving.
As you approach your job search, skill development, career growth, or whatever else you are facing right now, know this: you don’t want to look back on this time and wish you had done more with it. Know where you are in your journey. Know who you are. Don’t make yourself wrong for feeling what you’re feeling. Take the time to feel your feelings but don’t dwell there because it won’t serve you. Take on an “endgame perspective” and start at the end. How do you want to look back on yourself in 6 months? Do you want to feel like you were stuck in a rut or do you want to be able to say “I did xyz and it was amazing.”
Many things are unknown and out of our control. So why not take control of the things you can? Kristen is offering 15-minute power sessions. She will have “office hours” for 1-2 hours each week, where you can sign up for a power session of laser coaching, which is hyper-focused. Within the 15 minutes, you will dive deep into the heart of what you want to talk about. Is there something you’re stuck in with your career search? Something personally? Drop in or make an appointment. These sessions are completely free.
